We all love to run on them and play on them. Pets seek shade and coolness on them. But what does it take to have a healthy and green lawn in your yard? Fertilizing your lawn is the key step in maintaining a healthy lawn and beautiful Reno landscaping. However, when should you fertilize and what type of fertilizer do you use? All valid and important questions which Antonucci Lawn and Garden would like to address in this blog.A well-fed lawn creates a healthier lawn creating a stronger root system to fight off the heat, the cold and other stresses a lawn must endure throughout the year. Putting your lawn on a regularly scheduled fertilization plan, and sticking to that plan is the best thing for your lawn. Fertilizing your lawn depends a lot on the type of grass you have and the geographical location that you live in. But generally, fertilizing your lawn three to four times a year is acceptable. Never fertilize your lawn during the extreme heat of the day. The fertilizer can easily burn your grass leaving ugly brown spots. A good rule of thumb on setting up a fertilization schedule, is late winter/early spring, late spring/early summer, late summer/early fall, and late fall/early winter. A lot of this will be decided based on the type of grass that you have. Do you have cold weather grass, such as Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, and fine fescue? Or do you have a warm weather grass, such as Bahia, Bermuda, centipede, St. Augustine, and zoysia?

Cool Season Grasses:

• Bluegrass: Best to fertilize in the early spring, late summer and fall.

• Fine Fescue: Best to fertilize in the early spring, late summer and fall.

• Tall Fescue: Best to fertilize in either early or late spring, early or late summer and fall.

• Perennial Ryegrass: Best to fertilize in either early or late spring, early or late summer and fall.

Warm Season Grasses:

• Bahia: Best to fertilize in the early spring, late spring or early summer and fall.

• Common Bermuda: Best to fertilize in late spring or early summer and late summer or early fall.

• Hybrid Bermuda: Best to fertilize in either early or late spring, early or late summer and fall.

• Centipede: Best to fertilize in spring and summer.

• Zoysia: Best to fertilize in early spring, late spring or early summer, late summer and fall.

When fertilizing your lawn, each bag of fertilizer that you purchase will have a numbering system on it. For example, 10-10-10. The first number represents nitrogen which gives your grass its green color and causes it to grow above ground. The second number represents phosphorous which is important for your grass' root development. The third number represents potassium which is important for drought and disease resistance. When using any type of fertilizer, make sure you wear gloves and brush off any excess granules from your driveway or walkways.Your lawn is very important to you.
